San Francisco
San Francisco county encompasses a region of 121 square kilometres and 7.15 million people. While the city itself, which is located on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, only covers less than 47 square miles, it is the United States’ second most densely populated city.
A highly diversified and technologically advanced finance centre and a popular tourist destination, San Francisco has a relatively high standard of living. Internationally renowned and cosmopolitan, the city has a rich cultural life with many fine museums, restaurants and theatres, many found within the famous neighbourhoods of Chinatown, Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.
San Francisco has long been recognised as one of the world’s most progressive cities in terms of its thought leadership and political and social movements. San Francisco is now one of the most environmentally conscious cities. It recently received recognition as the United States’ ‘Greenest’ city in the Green City Index, with many policies and businesses creating comprehensive sustainability plans, practicing sustainable ventures, and using green technologies.
The City and County of San Francisco has been a participant of the UN Global Compact since 2005.
