Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru and is situated within the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers. Approximately one third of the Peruvian population (9 million people) live in Lima, which makes the city the fifth largest in Latin America.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, Lima’s historical centre bears witness to the urban development of a Spanish colonial city of great political, economic and cultural significance in Latin America.

Certain government organisations and businesses in Lima are addressing urban issues with a view to improving sustainable development practices. The Ministerio de Energia y Minas (Ministry of Energy and Mines), for example, is currently developing and implementing solar and wind projects in order to provide the residents of Lima with sustainable energy sources in the future.
