The City of Haifa is located in norther Israel and is the third largest city in the country, with a population of 268,200 in 2010. Haifa is situated on the Israeli Mediterranean Coastal Plain, which is a historic section of land that bridges Europe, Africa and Asia.

Haifa is one of the major seaports of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. The city is regarded as one of the nation’s major industrial centres and specialises mainly in heavy industries.

In 1972, the Municipality of Haifa established the Haifa Economic Corporation (HEC). The HEC is the Municipality’s development arm and initiates and develops large-scale projects aimed at creating sustainable economic, business and commercial opportunities. One of the HEC’s key projects is ‘Creating Green Electricity on Public Buildings’. Through this project, the HEC plans to install photovoltaic devices on the rooftops of public buildings throughout Haifa in order to contribute to sustainable energy generation in the region.
