The city and municipality of Campo Mourào is located in the Brazilian state of Paranà, 477 kilometres from the state’s capital, Curatiba. It is mainly an agricultural region and the municipality has a population of around 90,000 people. It lies on the river basin of the Rio Ivai, which cuts through the city from north to south. Campo Mourào’s urban expansion is restricted by the physical constraints of two other rivers.

Discovered by the Portugese in 1769/70,  the region was originally called Campos do Mourào (the fields of Maurào) named after Mourào the Governor of Sào Paulo from 1765-1775. The Municipality was established in 1947. Campo Mourào is well known for the challenges involved in paving the Cowboy’s Road, which was opened at the beginning of the century by cowboys who brought cattle bought for fattening in Mato Grosso in Paraná. Work to seal this road has been undertaken, with some interuption since 1986. Once completed it will open a channel for the state to transport agricultural production to the port of Paranagua.

The City and Municipality of Campo Mourào has been a participant of the UN Global Compact since 2011.
