Bonn is located in the Cologne/Bonn Region and covers an area of 141.22km2. In 2010, the city had a population of 324,899.

Bonn was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990 and continues to play a major role in government today. Due to the lasting political importance of Bonn, the former capital holds the title of Federal City.

Bonn has transformed into a centre of international cooperation in the context of environmental protection and sustainable development. The city hosts 17 United Nations institutions, most of which are based at the United Nations Campus. Connecting and maintaining partnerships that focus on sustainability with other cities around the world, such as Ulaan Baatar in Mongolia and La Paz in Bolivia, Bonn is regarded as a global leader in sustainability.
