Piedecuesta

Located on the north eastern range of the Andes the city of Piedecusta has a population of 129,000. The locality spans across 344 km2 and comprises valleys, plateaus, mountains and hills. Agricullture, with a focus on the production of sugar cane and tobacco, is Piedecuesta’s main industry.

The borders of the Piedecuesta Municipality are demarcated by the fault line of Bucaramanga to the East, the seismic knot and the fault line of the Saints to the South, the fault line of the Suárez River to the West and fault lines of Ruitoque and River Oro to the North. Locals have adapted to the environmental challenges presented by the landscape of Piedecuesta, which include the Andean climate and the seismic dynamics of the region.

Piedecusta is a main source of water, with the Oro, Hato and Manco rivers and 12 streams stemming from within its borders. The local community is currently seeking to devise sustainable water practices in order to address the issues such as water contamination and the deforestation of catchment areas.
