Tunja is a city and municipality in the Alto Chicomocha region, which is located in central Columbia.  As of 2005, the city had 152,419 inhabitants.

Tunja is known as a centre for education, as supported by the statistic that one out of five residents is a high school or university student. The city is particularly recognised for its rich history, which is evidenced by buildings, churches and artefacts that date back to the 16th century.

Tunja increasingly seeks to find sustainable answers to its complex urban issues, particularly in relation to the development of regional infrastructure and access to public services. The city’s urban planning initiatives aim to provide long-term solutions for urban, semi-urban and rural inhabitants of Tunja.
