Innovation and Collaboration for the Future We Want

The UN Global Compact hosted the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum: Innovation and Collaboration for the Future We Want from Friday 15 to Monday 18 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was in cooperation with the Rio+20 Secretariat, the UN System and the Global Compact Local Network Brazil.

The Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum was one of the side events leading into the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development

The Forum was established as a venue for business, industry and investors to meet with Governments, local authorities, civil society and UN entities in dozens of highly focused workshops and thematic sessions linked to the Rio+20 agenda. More than 2,000 participants registered.

Urbanisation and Cities

The Cities Programme hosted three sessions at the Rio+20 CS Forum and also contributed to the coordination of the Forum’s Urbanisation and Cities track, working with New York colleagues Kristina Wilson and Carrie Hall.
The Forum was an excellent opportunity for showcasing innovation, networking, and building partnerships and alliances. Highlight’s included:
  • the launch of the new statewide urban sustainability initiative in Brazil, Alianca Nossos Paranà Sustentàvel, see the report on the Alliance launch by Governor Beto Richa and background on the new Paranà UNGCCP Regional Secretariat.
  • World Vision International’s co-hosted session on “Innovation and Collaboration to Address Urban Poverty” (with UNGCCP)
  • UNGCCP – ‘Sustainable Cities: Global Challenges, Local Solutions’
  • UN Habitat - Building Partnerships for Urban Futures: Leveraging Strengths, Driving Change through Shared Values – this session included formalisation of UN Habitat’s partnership with UNGCCP.
  • Global Compact Network Spain – ‘Looking Into the Future of Sustainability: An Approach to Sustainable Cities and Renewable Energy’.
  • UNEP - The Path to Resource Efficient Cities: Innovation in Action
  • The Climate Group - ’Lighting the Clean Revolution: Business and Transformational Change in an Urban Environment’
  • UNITAR – ‘Cities at the Heart of the Future We Want’
  • Sustainia – ‘Building the World of Tomorrow’
