Become a signatory City to the UN Global Compact

The initial and foundation stage of becoming a participant in the Cities Programme is to become a signatory to the UN Global Compact. This commitment is undertaken by the Mayor or most senior representative of municipal governnment  on behalf of the city or regional centre.

Step 1: Review the online application guidelines

Review the Online Application Guidelines on the Global Compact website.

Step 2: The Mayor signs a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General

The Mayor signs a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon committing the organisation/city to the 10 Principles of the Global Compact and  participation in the activities of the initiative where feasible. This is written on your organisation’s letterhead.

Step 3: Submit an on-line application

Scan the letter from the Mayor to the Secretary General and upload as part of the on-line application at the Global Compact

Step 4: You receive confirmation from the Global Compact

You will receive a letter from the Director of the UN Global Compact welcoming you and encouraging you to participate in your local network, initiatives of the Global Compact and the Cities Programme.

Step 5: Your city is listed on the Global Compact website

Your city or regional centre will be listed on the UN Global Compact website and also featured on the Cities Programme website.
