Peñalolen is located east of the province of Santiago, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile. Its territory borders five communities: La Reina to the north, Florida to the south, on the east by Las Condes, and the west by Providencia and Macul.

Peñalolen, meaning “meeting of brothers” in Mapudungun, is today a residential commune. The Municipality of Peñalolen was created on November 15, 1984, after the reformulation of the metropolitan community, which gave birth to 17 new municipalities in the Province of Santiago. The municipality currently has about 120 000 inhabitants and includes an area of about 55 km2.

The municipality and the services available to the community are guided by a set of strategic objectives in Health, Education, Safety, Priority Groups, Land Development, Culture and Sport, Integration, Economic Development and Institutional Modernisation.

Mayor Carolina Alvarez-Salamanca Leitao committed Peñalolen to the UN Ten Principles in September 2013.
